Sr. Product & Regulatory Counsel

Position Summary

As we advance our vision of modern money movement, Marqeta seeks a stellar product and regulatory lawyer who’ll be deeply engaged to help us grow and scale. You’ll be responsible for working in close partnership with financial institutions, networks and cross functional teams to provide product counseling, legal and regulatory guidance as we develop and deliver financial products and services, and enter into new global business relationships.

What You'll Do

  • Provide timely, concise and business-focused legal advice on payments law, consumer financial services law, and banking regulations (e.g. Regulation E, BSA/AML, UDAAP, card network rules and interchange regulation)
  • Negotiate agreements and support our relationships with banks and card network partners
  • Work with banks in developing cardholder agreements and reviewing program collateral
  • Deeply engage with Product teams who are building technology to enable global money movement
  • Support and advise the Go-To-Market team by helping to craft customer solutions to enable the launch of payment programs
  • Instruct and manage outside counsel, as necessary

What We're Looking For

  • 8+ years’ experience practicing either in-house or at a reputable law firm, preferably with at least 4 years focused on payments law or financial services regulatory analysis
  • Experience analyzing and advising on a wide range of issues related to the fintech industry, including prepaid, debit and credit products
  • Experience negotiating and drafting complex financial services agreements
  • Understanding of the payments industry including the laws, rules and regulations related to banks and the participants in the payments eco-system, including issuer processors and program managers
  • Understanding of novel technology (e.g. APIs, tokenization, crypto) and how it is viewed from a regulatory lens 
  • A keen sense of ownership, and highly adaptable to a fast-changing environment
  • A solid business focus with practical risk awareness
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to work both in teams and independently
  • Admitted to a state bar
  • Sense of humor with a high level of emotional intelligence and self-awareness
