Position summary

Marqeta is seeking a Tax Director to lead all aspects of the Global Tax Function including International, Domestic, Research, Planning, Compliance, and Tax Accounting. The successful candidate will design and execute short and long-term strategies to mitigate tax risk and maximize after tax profits while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local tax regulations globally. 

The selected individual will be a dynamic and innovative leader with significant tax experience in a multinational corporation with a proven track record of setting priorities and leading a team in tax research, tax planning, tax compliance, financial reporting, and audit. Success in this role will require the ability to drive and influence change across multiple functions and geographies, creating a sustainable tax structure through process improvements.

What you'll do

  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations while working to minimize tax liability and maximize after tax profits.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of income tax provision 
  • Establish strategies to minimize tax expense and exposures with regard to taxes paid to federal, state, and foreign jurisdictions, including income, property, and sales and use taxes.
  • Assist with the detailed preparation of corporate tax returns and month-end accruals. 
  • Responsible for establishing and implementing tax policy. Represent and defend the tax position of the organization to tax regulating bodies during audits or reviews.
  • Develop accurate forecasts and sensitivity analysis for tax expense and cash taxes to be paid in the future.
  • Advise senior leaders, and other parties with regard to tax issues related to strategic business decisions.
  • Lead the tax M&A diligence, structuring and international expansion efforts.
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting of income tax provision (ASC 740) and all related footnotes and disclosures for the financial statements.

What we're looking for

  • Experience working in the financial services or financial / technology industry
  • Experience interacting and representing the company to external auditors and financial regulators
  • A minimum 10+ years of experience in one or a combination of the following audit or risk functions: risk identification, mitigation and management (includes audit, operational risk, compliance risk, credit risk, market risk, technology risk, or the management of a process or business with accountability for risk)
  • An appropriate certification in accounting and/or auditing is mandatory, including a CPA, CA, or CIA is required
  • Excellent executive presence, leadership and communication skills.  Ability to partner and influence cross-functionally
  • Experience in a Big 4 or comparable consulting institution preferred
