Payment Card Fraud: Detection & Prevention

A new white paper from Aite-Novarica tells how card payment fraud is impacting issuers.

This white paper, “Payment Card Fraud: Classification, Detection and Prevention,” from Aite-Novarica Group, commissioned by Marqeta, we explore how card issuers can better protect themselves and their customers from fraud and disruption by leveraging advanced tools and approaches.

Highlights from this white paper include the following:

  • Fraudsters approach each decision with a profit mindset. They focus on the low- hanging fruit or the path of least resistance and leverage the available technologies and tools that empower them to be more efficient and effective.

  • The primary types of payment card fraud are application fraud (including synthetic identities), card-not-present (CNP), counterfeit, lost, stolen, and non-received.

  • While the distribution of losses across the various fraud types is different by market,

the general pattern since the rollout of EMV chip verification is that CNP fraud ranks the highest, followed by lost, stolen, or non-received cards and counterfeit fraud.
