Senior Manager, Settlement

Position Summary

Marqeta is experiencing exponential growth and is seeking to augment our Settlement Controls organization with additional payments expertise and controls leadership.   The Settlement Controls organization is at the  core of our business with accountability and responsibility of global funds movement and financial accountability for our customers, bank partners, and networks.  We continue to scale through building efficient, responsive, and accurate processes, implementing new tools, controls, and expanding our support services to internal and external customers and banking partners.  We are passionate to ensure customer trust in the MQ platform through transaction processing validation; partner to build funds flows and controls across category defining products; perform daily/monthly functions with operational excellence to ensure customer satisfaction and financial integrity.  Our motto is ‘Ensure globally, Program funds are in the right place, at the right time, for the right purpose’.  

We are seeking to expand the Settlement Transactions & Systems Controls function to keep pace with exponential transaction volume, global customer expansion, added banking partners and networks, along with expansion of Digital Banking products. This role augments the existing team and brings Network/Payments expertise and leadership/approvals for daily network transaction reconciliations between Visa, MasterCard, Discover etc.  Additionally, this position will serve as a mentor to the team and support analysis and resolution of the most complex issues and drive root cause solutions in partnership with Product/Technology. The Sr. Manager has specific responsibility for escalations and metrics reporting This position will also partner closely with the department Director and VP creating and implementing the ongoing strategy of transaction and systems controls in partnership with Audit, Product and Technology.   This role will have an integral part in the implementation of new tools underway for network transaction reconciliation in conjunction with several strategic enhancements to build the much broader capabilities required in support of Marqeta’s modern money movement objectives globally. Experience in Network reconciliations is a must and experience with global payments/SWIT and/or US ACH is a plus.   

What You'll Do

  • Be a key representative in planning, documentation and execution of transaction reconciliation controls, metric reporting, requirements and implementation of both short and long term solutions
  • Partner with functional and technical teams to perform data, technical and business analysis needed for building reconciliations and making decisions
  • Partner to drive FDS (Financial Data Service) Requirements and testing initiatives needed to deploy current and future network reconciliations, financial controls and reporting
  • Ensure, and perform as a backup, dual control over complex daily transactional reconciliations between network and Marqeta data to ensure data integrity and alignment between sources for purchases, refunds and disputes
  • Proactively identify issues relating to network reconciliations in a timely manner as well as propose potential solutions and lead their implementation
  • Partner with Data & Insight teams to identify any opportunities for improvements with current data structures and ensure proper access to network-related reports, databases and query tools are available to complete data analytics needed for reconciliation and research
  • May develop processes and build queries to research exceptions and transactions using Network files and Marqeta data sources to determine accuracy and confirm if any corrections are required
  • Create user guides for access requests, SQL training, data dictionaries, troubleshooting techniques and queries used for associated use cases
  • Collaborate with end users and management to optimize and improve current operating, recon and business processes
  • Partner with end users to provide guidance and assistance with issuing production support tickets needed to resolve any outages between network and Marqeta data based in current SLAs
  • Lead collaborations with Production Support teams to confirm current processes and ticket submissions are timely and accurate to ensure minimal customer impacts
  • Identify any issues and/or gaps with current reconciliations and work with management and fellow team members to determine impact, prioritization and resolution
  • Outline and document current as-is and to-be processes, in addition to business and systems requirements needed for future platform implementations
  • Collaborate with Product Management and Technology teams to groom current bugs, defects or enhancements needed for current and/or new reconciliations
  • Complete any needed time-sensitive month-end reporting required for billing and accounting close procedures
  • Train and mentor Settlement Analysts. Provide assistance and training to fellow business system analysts with building and troubleshooting current and new reconciliations
  • Write training and user guide documentation for new and existing reconciliations.
  • Assist management in completing any ad hoc or assigned tasks related to overall  Settlement deposits, funding and bank reconciliation initiatives
  • Collaborate and communicate with management to provide status updates related to training, recon development, any associated gaps, and/or assigned tasks or projects.

Equally important is having demonstrated success and desire in solving problems and driving results. Furthermore, we are looking for candidates who have a keen sense of ownership, being adaptive to a fast-changing environment, and a high curiosity to learn about the payments business and products.

  • Bachelor's Degree and 8+ years’ experience in Network Payments,  Banking or Fintech 
  • Strong ability to understand and connect the dots on how different parts of the business drive funds movements and impact Settlement team functions and staffing
  • Knowledge of general accounting principles and ability to question/verify correctness and completeness of data
  • Strong analytical skills, good problem-solving, judgment and decision-making skills with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong desire to implement and oversee controls with emphasis on continuous improvement
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and detail-oriented is a must
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively


  • Highly proficient in Excel (Complex Formulas/Macros is a plus)
  • Project management experience 
  • Python/SQL/Data Studio/Looker/Tableau
